What Is Web Hosting and Why Should You Care Who Provides It?
Updated 26 September 2026: An earlier version of this article made blanket claims about hosting prices, features, guarantees and data protection. Those details vary by plan and provider and should be checked against current terms.
Web hosting is the service that makes your website available online. The host provides the environment where the site runs; your domain name points visitors towards it. Website content, email and backups may be managed by different providers, so it helps to know who is responsible for each part.
Compare the service you will actually use
A low price does not tell you whether a plan is suitable. Ask about available resources, support arrangements, what is included in maintenance, and what happens when your site grows. Check how your own pages perform on a phone rather than assuming a particular storage technology will make every site fast.
- Where will the website and its data be hosted, and which suppliers may process it?
- What is backed up, how often, and who has tested a restore?
- Is HTTPS included and who renews the certificate?
- How are support requests handled, and what response or uptime commitments are written into the plan?
- What are the current price, renewal price, cancellation rules and migration arrangements?
A UK server location can be relevant to a business requirement, but it does not by itself establish data protection compliance. Check the supplier relationship and handling of personal information against your own obligations; the ICO explains controller responsibilities when using processors.
Plan a move around the whole customer journey
If you change host, identify the site files, database, forms, DNS, email dependencies and any external integrations before the switch. Submit a test enquiry after launch and make sure it reaches the right person. If URLs change, map the old pages to relevant destinations; Google’s site move guidance explains redirects and testing.
Backups deserve the same attention as the visible site. The NCSC’s small organisation guidance recommends keeping copies of important business data; ask how the parts you rely on would be restored.
